Where do they go?

The migration is in full swing. Thousands of birds come through the area here. We are lucky enough to be on the migration flyway. The Sandhill Cranes draw people from all over wanting to see the masses of these gorgeous birds. At four feet tall and numbers in the thousands it is something to behold. But they are not the only ones preparing for the cold.

The migraters are obvious in their preparations, but all the critters need to get ready. We have a frog that spends his summers in one of the water dishes we provide for the wildlife. I call him Tibbir (Ribbit spelled backwards) He has gotten quite used to us and poses nicely for pictures. He is there every day till the temperature drops and then he’s gone.

I know how frogs bury themselves in ponds and lakes. I have no idea where Tibbir goes. The drive for animals at this time of year is intense. They are guided by a force born of instinct. I am compelled to prepare for winter as well, but I think my drive is born of terror. If any of you have ever misjudged the first snow you will know what I mean.

It is hard enough prepping a chicken coop for winter, but having to slog through the snow to do it, well let’s just say that brings with it a new level of exhaustion and the creation of some very colorful language. Fingers crossed I’ll get through my list of chores before the snow flies.

May your frogs always pose for pictures.
