Where are the cranes?

The fall migration was odd this year. Winds from the south kept the birds from coming down till late in the season. They wisely don’t like to battle against the wind to make the long journey. Many species of birds stay here for a time as they stock up on food and rest. The farm fields here are important to them. They travel out of the nearby wildlife refuge during the day, cleaning up all the fields that have been harvested.

We had a horrible drought this summer and then rain this fall. That poorly timed moisture kept the farmers from bringing in their fields at the regular time. Add to that we had over 4 inches of snow in October and seriously cold temps the migration was all over the place.

Allen and I are never daunted though. We love going out to the one of the refuges in the area no matter what. Manu, our dog is getting pretty good at sitting with us when we do. We always have a blanket and some treats for him but on this last trip, he wanted a chair of his own. I’m always happy to share.

May the wind always blow in your direction.
