Seek advice from the locals.

I don’t mean just your neighbors, though my neighbors are the best. They are kind and helpful and don’t laugh too hard when I do foolish things.

No I mean the critters, and even the green growings. If you want to understand the environment you live in, just watch and learn. When we moved in, I wanted to add color to our gardens so I planted all the flowers I was familiar with. That did not go well. We have a sandy soil, I tried to force what I wanted into a habitat for which they were not well suited.

I’m stubborn so it took a few years for me to let go and see with better eyes. I started harvesting the seeds of weeds, which in truth are just flowers we have not yet come to appreciate. Now my yard is covered in life and color that flourishes in this soil and this weather. They are happy here.

I have come to appreciate all the critters in the area even though they can be challenging, I know they are important. I will admit to struggling a little seeing how mice are essential, but that’s because they have cost us thousands of dollars in damage.

They are very fond of eating wires. The wires in cars, and snowblowers, and ATV’s, they can’t get enough. The worst part is they seem to know the most expensive place to eat. The mechanic has said on several occasions, “It would have been an easy fix if they would have just chewed the wires a couple inches away. What they picked to eat is going to cost a whole lot more.”

What can I say, we have a very discerning clientele of mice. They know the good stuff. And I know they will be back for more. Then this is their place more than ours. One must always capitulate to the locals.

May you always be well suited to the place you put down roots.
