Protection, Power, Patience, and Paws.. Really Big Paws

All moms are amazing, but critter moms spark an awe in me. They battle every day to take care of their little ones. The weather, the bugs, the predators, finding food and water, these moms are impressive. I have had the privilege of seeing bear moms doing their thing for a number of years. Luckily for us they seem to feel safe bringing their little ones into the yard.

Mom will lay under the feeder scooping up seeds while she sends her cubs up the tree to sleep. There of course is always the one cub that has no desire to sleep. He’ll jump on mom or grab her ear and pull, never stopping for a second. She will put up with it all to keep them safe. Bears courage is born of instinct. Humans not so much.

So many people can be knocked off their path by either fear or cruelty of others, young women in particular. Fortunately there are people out there doing something about it. Ann Bancroft is one of those people. Most people know the Minnesota native for her amazing exploration adventures, but she has established a foundation to help young girls and women find their path.

The medium the Ann Bancroft foundation uses to deliver the program is based in the environment, but its goals are so much greater. To quote Ann, “It’s (about) developing the kinds of things that make for an engaged adult woman, and that will affect communities wherever they go because they’ll have confidence, they’ll be courageous.”

What a powerful and vital objective, to awaken the courageousness in young women. It’s been said it takes a village to raise a child. I agree, but more than that, it takes a hopeful village filled with courageous women. I strongly believe it is essential to have courage in order to have hope. Hope is a participatory endeavor, one who has it never sits on the sidelines. They are leading the charge to a better world for us all. Ann Bancroft is a woman of hope.

May your patience always prevail when the kids just won’t nap.
