Most dogs have a fear of loud noises, gunfire, fireworks, and thunder. Our Manu is no different. But a couple years ago he started reacting to far more unusual sounds. Take the TV for instance, he started running away if he heard a click. Some of the shows we watched had a glitch in the sound and there was an occasional click. It wasn’t loud at all, but still he would run and hide.
Then car chases, shouting, or heavy base music on the TV would put him in a tizzy. For those of you that have Netflix you know when the logo appears two base notes play. Well we now do not turn on the sound till the logo is gone. The same for Acorn TV, they have a five or six note logo identifier that also sets the dog off.
Now we have come to terms with that craziness. Closed captioning is essential for us as we need to turn the sound off often for the whack-a-doodle dog. But the next sound that caused him to react is really a nuisance. He is terrified of the oven. Those of you that have a gas oven know the sound it makes, a click followed by a whoosh as the gas turns on. Well that sent Manu scrambling to get out of the house. Mind he didn’t do this for the first 3 years. We have no idea what set it off.
The first time it happened I let him outside thinking he would just curl up in his bed out on the porch but no. That dog ran out into the driveway and sat down. It was below zero, but there he sat. It took me twenty minutes to chase him down and bring him back in. I cleared out one of the places he likes to hide during thunderstorms for him. It was so weird.
We still have the turkey we bought for thanksgiving in the freezer because we didn’t want to face his terror for hours. In truth I don’t know if we are crazy or lazy. Crazy because we are letting the dog decide what food we are allowed to cook or lazy because we can’t face dealing with the panic we see in his eyes. Either way everyone in this house sees the oven as some sort of monster just waiting to attack.
May your mute always be on when the Netflix logo appears.
