Over 100 swans call Crex meadows home for the summer. There a few mated pairs but most are not. They are in small family units on a lake not within the refuge but the greater wildlife area of the meadows.
They go through a molt like many other waterfowl. It is amazing to see the piles of feathers they leave behind. You should know big birds have big feathers.
For some reason I don’t understand these birds love to see my dog Manu. When we get out of the car for a walk they come over to the shore to see us, even follow us as we walk down the road. It is a glorious and strange experience. It has happened three years in a row. Swans have good memories.
May you always have friends who molt with you.
