Abundance!

Nature is without a doubt amazing. Since moving up here to the north woods we have noticed every year is different. The abundance will wax and wane. This happens with both flora and fauna. One year it was mullein on the green growing side. You have likely seen it. It’s the plant that grows around four feet tall with a corn cob looking thing on top covered in tiny yellow flowers. On the critter side that year, was a very busy chipmunk explosion.

After that, we saw a year of foxes and bee balm, followed by fishers and butterfly weed. There is always something in high production. This year it is berries and bunnies. All the berry trees are going to town, but the black cherries are intense, with some of the branches hanging on the ground. Love seeing them all.

The bunnies have afforded me an exciting sighting. Early one morning I was sitting on the couch sipping tea and typing on a new book. I looked up and just outside the window was what I at first thought was the biggest cat I had ever seen. Then he turned his head, and I realized I was looking at a lynx. He was regal as he sat there trying to look like a rock, at which he was succeeding. He was stalking a bunny. I was so fortunate to see him and not the end of that chase.

Things are always changing. Seeing that beast reminded me that there is so much going on all the time whether we see it or not. I have seen lynx tracks for years here, just never the beast in the flesh. This encounter was more than exciting, not so much for the bunny.

May all of your bunnies be fast, really fast.
